The Everglades Historically (early 1900s)
- Ø Stretched from Orlando to southern Florida
- Ø Water from Kissimmee River flowed South into shallow Lake Okeechobee
- Ø Lake Okeechobee overflows during wet season, which forms the slow-moving river of grass that extends to Florida Bay (9)
Modern Day:
- Ø 50% lost as a result of drainage & replaced with urban areas and farms
- Ø Lake Okeechobee is now connected to the estuaries & rivers’ fragile ecosystems receive damaging lake water
- Ø Everglades is threatened from runoff, which leads to shifts in natural flora and fauna (9)
