                                                  The Everglades Historically (early 1900s)

  • Ø  Stretched from Orlando to southern Florida
  • Ø  Water from Kissimmee River flowed South into shallow Lake Okeechobee
  • Ø  Lake Okeechobee overflows during wet season, which forms the slow-moving river of grass that extends to Florida Bay (9)


                                 Modern Day:
  • Ø  50% lost as a result of drainage & replaced with urban areas and farms
  • Ø  Lake Okeechobee is now connected to the estuaries & rivers’ fragile ecosystems receive damaging lake water
  • Ø  Everglades is threatened from runoff, which leads to shifts in natural flora and fauna (9)
